It is a commonly accepted fact that those who are involved in a weight loss community are more likely to lose pounds and keep them off than those who go at it alone. Thousands of people go to village halls, schools and gyms across the country to take part in communities like Weight Watchers or Slimming World and they find the comradeship extremely beneficial. Why might this be?

People who are overweight tend to have low self-esteem and losing weight for their own benefit may not be enough of a motivation. How Will This Blog Help Me Sell My Product?

Recently, I took on a client who is looking for a new approach to selling a product whose sales have flattened. (Sound familiar?) Her product is a cookbook full of healthy recipes geared toward diabetics; her question was, how is a blog likely to help her generate sales?

Two sentences into my reply, I realized that this is killer material which applies broadly across all kinds of business models. Here's what I told her:

There are a lot of other people out there selling books online, right? But only a fraction of them sell cookbooks, and an even smaller proportion sell cookbooks, and ultimately only one of them combines easy diabetic-friendly recipes, useful anecdotes, a pleasant writing style and a low price - you. (I assume I am representing you at least reasonably well?)

The same trickle-down effect applies to people who buy books, buy cookbooks, buy diabetic-friendly cookbooks. And among those there are going to be people who want exactly what you're offering. Your first objective is to define your very specific category in which you and your product are #1 - and define your target market with the same level of detail. (For those who remember, this same concept was illustrated in an August 2007 post about marketing to the Long Tail.)

Then the blog is how you connect them-in a few easy steps.

1. Define your voice and subject content.

For example, you could define your blog as a "lite" version of your cookbook: stories about your experiences as a diabetic, news items showing how the foods showcased in your cookbook are rising in popularity, the occasional recipe, and so on. Alternatively, you could make your blog more of a forum for other diabetics to share their own "wish lists" for diabetic-friendly recipes.

2. Pull in information from various sources.

Do you cruise the internet consuming content related to cooking, diabetes, health eating, etc? If what you find is germane to the theme of your blog, bookmark everything and use it for future posts! Example: a graph documenting trends in healthy eating, a new bestselling cookbook (and what it lacks, that yours has), another blogger's personal accounts of the difficulties of eating healthy with diabetes. This stuff is all out there. Navigating the internet, particularly with search engines like Google, is an invaluable skill - very apparent in an exercise like this. 3. Write, and write often.

Search engines tend to favor active, dynamic sources of information. A web site which is published and never changes will rarely reach its full potential, because Google, Yahoo! and other search engines don't trust them as much. If you, the blogger, show expertise and dedication by updating your site with fresh content on a regular basis, you immediately establish your authority and expertise in the subject at hand. As a rule of thumb, if your blog's primary objective is to sell products or services, you should write once a week at minimum. Many bloggers post once a day, or more.

Your goal is for your blog content to become link bait - the kind of content that people read, reread, forward, and post all over the internet by their own volition. Once you get really good, you'll effortlessly be creating link bait on a regular basis.

And then a remarkable thing will happen. After a few months of regular, dedicated activity, the search engines will start to take notice of the frequent mentions of keywords that are relevant to what you sell, e.g. "healthy eating," "easy recipes," "low calorie," "diabetic-friendly," and so on. Meanwhile, visitors begin to interact with your content, posting comments of all types: supporting your ideas, contradicting them, elaborating on them, and so on. If a few of those people are themselves bloggers, your visibility begins to multiply. Your blog starts to climb higher and higher in the search rankings for these topics.

A sizable proportion of people are typing these terms, along with the word "cookbook," into Google and other search engines. They're someone's customers-and if your blog ties back to your e-commerce enabled web site, they're yours and you're already halfway to making a sale. With each and every one of them. Effectively, what you've done here is humanize your site, draw people in and engage them with your unique content, and stand out in their minds the next time they're presented with a dozen options to buy cookbooks.

There's no doubt that this is a significant time commitment. But patience is a virtue-and like all marketing projects, you get what you put in! Have some fun with it, and the upside is all yours for the taking.

When I started my MLM business, I was immediately told I needed my own blog in order to achieve MLM success. I was told it was immensely important to my work and my business. I will admit, this idea took a bit to sink in and even then when I got the website up, but did very little with it for some time. It was mainly waiting for me to get started. More correctly, for me to finally understand how tremendously important it is to my business to have my own blog.

I had the blog up, but did not do any work on it as somewhere in my head I was constantly thinking later. I had so many other parts to mind, why would I have a blog? I had all these other funnels that I put so much time in to, that are great.

I finally got it. It was one of those a-ha moments that you hear and read about. My blog really is my business. The only funnel to MLM success is to have a successful blog. Everything else I was doing, the social sites, the article writing, the free ads, the auto responder, all comes back to my website and my blog, that truly is my business. I started to work on making the blog look good and search engine attractive. Not only was did this blog contain my whole business, but it needed to have the right look and the right content. I found out that web design is just as important and is a whole business of its own. It took a bit of work, but once it was done and I could start to add my blogs to it, I discovered that working on it is actually quite a bit of fun. Good thing I enjoy it as it is important to constantly work on it and add valuable content. All the work to create a website that is me and my business.

Another great important reason to have your own blog is that it is the one part of your business that is yours and that you control. Should any of the other business funnels fail, you will still have your hub and your lists.

A couple of very general, but essential, tips on creating a blog. Since the blog now is your business, it needs to reflect you. Make sure it contains interesting and valuable material to your readers. Do not forget to add some fun too. Avoid any form of negativity such as criticism or arguments. Should your blog start to become uninteresting and dull, then you need to change you. As simple as that. Your blog works a bit like your room or house. If it is messy, then your life probably are too. You need to find the right mindset to find MLM success, which online is your blog.

1) Get links to your blog; This is by far the most important, so for example you need to add your blog to social networking sites such as Stumble Upon or Digg, but beyond that look around, writing online articles will also get traffic to your blog. Updating a blog can be once a week or each day, but it always needs to be updated, otherwise people will not come back.

5) Understand the value of return traffic: In this case you have them "hooked" and they will come back, and potentially comment or buy that book. Have something of value for return traffic. Which is why linking between posts is a good thing, and why updates are of value. Make certain that comments are clear of spam, and that your focus on your blog and on your products are good, so that traffic will come again. Writing great content is important in the beginning, so take time to make certain you give the best value to all your traffic, and encourage them to buy that book, because yes traffic to your blog will help book sales.

Online Writing - Why a Blog Helps You Build Credibility As a Writer

If you are planning on becoming an online writer, you should be planning to have a blog as well.

Now I know you might be wondering why you should write for nothing when you can be paid by clients to write for them instead. But the truth is that you WILL be paid for writing your blog - it just won't happen in quite the same way.

Let's look into this a bit more closely so you can understand what I mean. It must be eighteen months now since I started my blog. For the first year or so I honestly felt like I was blogging out there on my own. I had the odd - very odd - comment that someone would leave, but for the most part I just got out there and blogged for the love of it. I didn't really worry too much about traffic or building a readership.

Then I finally decided to make the leap to my own domain name and self hosted Wordpress blog. To begin with everything felt pretty much the same - I was blogging quite happily and hoping to start building up a readership.

And that's exactly what started to happen. The thing was though, I started getting comments and emails from people who had been following my old free blog (quietly it would seem!) for months. But now they were starting to say thank you for the information and advice I had given them.

My idea has always been to make it easier for other people to get started in online writing than it was for me. And I didn't exactly find it too difficult to get going in that respect. But I did it on my own, through sheer hard work. No advice and no support in that sense either.

I haven't mentioned money yet though. And yet other things have occurred through my perseverance with my blog too. I've had clients contact me out of the blue - via my blog - asking me if I could do some work for them. And as I am starting to make more and more connections with people and commenting on their blogs in return, so I am finding that the pay off from my blog is starting to happen.

For the record I don't have any AdSense on my blog at the moment. I have a couple of affiliate links - literally two I think - and that's about it. They have brought in a trickle of money. But by far the best result of all has been to actually find new clients through it.

And of course, I can also apply for jobs and point them towards my blog to show them what I can do. I have several month's worth of posts on there now and I hope it gives people a good feel for my writing style.

It certainly seems to have helped with my online writing job applications. I applied for a dozen in the last week and all but one have come through for me. It can be a busy time ahead when you have a blog behind you to support you.

This type of blog would typically be used to pass information onto the readers, who would most likely be anxiety sufferers. It's an ideal way of passing on snippets of information, making it easy on the eye to read and easy for the mind to absorb.

The writer invariably has a strong desire to help others and an anxiety blog is an ideal way to be able to pass on as much specific information as possible.

Quite often there is an area where the reader can leave a comment after an entry and this can open up the way for the writer and reader to interact with each other. It also leads it to have a more personal feel to it rather than just reading print from a screen.

I write a weekly email newsletter for anxiety sufferers and I use my blog as a reference tool for my readers. Each week, after the newsletter has been sent out, I then upload the contents of that newsletter to my blog pages. That way the newsletters or articles are always there in one place should any of my readers want to access them for further reference rather than them having to search back through their email inbox.

The Personal Blog

This type of blog would be very much written in the style of a diary. It could be a day-to-day record of how anxiety is affecting the life of the writer. It could also track the progress of the writer as they work through various processes or exercises to get their anxiety more under control.

The thing to remember is that blogs are written to be read. If you want to keep your thoughts and progress private then a blog is not for you. However, if you choose to write a blog about your anxiety so that others can read it then this can sometimes be very helpful to other sufferers.

They will be able to follow your journey, with its many ups and downs along the way, and perhaps take some hope from the fact that you are going through similar things to them. Better still, if you find that you are finally starting to break free from anxiety's hold on you, it's a wonderful feeling to be able to share that with the world and give hope to others by showing them what you have achieved and how you did it.

So the second key is research and careful attention. Ron and other blogging marketers have to study the market, pay attention to peoples' needs and input, and adjust their presentation accordingly.

To return to the point that there is money to be made in blogging, one would be remiss not to pay attention to the successful Problogger. In the classic 'make money teaching others to make money,' tradition, this is a blog that makes its revenue by teaching users how to make money through professional blogging. So there clearly IS money to be made in the blogging-as-marketing world.

Blogger or WordPress?

Choose between to two most popular blogging platforms available. Personally I prefer WordPress as do a lot of other people. This is purely down to the fact that there's more usability and you can interact more with your readers.

Sign yourself up an account with either of them and away you go. Your choice who you choose (WordPress) as I am not biased towards either... (WordPress)

Once you have signed up and got your first blog up and running, play around with it. Get to grips with your dashboard and themes available. Do not worry about money or advertising yet as you need to get to grips with blogs and blogging first. Once you are on good terms with your blog and you can use it to its maximum capacity.
